Prasiolite is a yellow-green to green variety of Quartz. It is found where a (purple) Amethyst-bearing rock unit has been heated by lava flows to turn the purple into pale yellowish-green to green Prasiolite. It can also be created by heat-treating Amethyst, which will change colors ranging from yellow (Citrine) to green (Prasiolite). This is why Prasiolite is commonly referred to as "Green Amethyst" - although Amethyst specifically refers to purple Quartz, while Prasiolite is the name for this beautiful green Quartz. This green Quartz is also referred to as vermarine or lime citrine. All those names refer to this beautiful green stone!
The name "Prasiolite" is derived from two Greek words: prason, which means "leek," and lithos, which means "stone."
